How does my inReach™ work with my iOS device (iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®)or Android device?
inReach™ connects wirelessly with iOS and Android devices using bluetooth. You can compose messages up to 160 characters on your phone or tablet and send them directly to email, mobile phones, or SOS. Messages can also be posted to Facebook and Twitter as well as your MapShare page. MapShare is a web-based map that stores your track points and messages for visitors to view, and you can password protect your MapShare page or make it public. If you have an Android or Apple device, you need to download the free Earthmate app from the online Google Play site or the iTunes App Store to enable inReach™ functionality. DeLorme Atlas of the Earth maps can be downloaded at no charge for use on Android and Apple phones and tablets and iPod touch devices.
Is inReach™ compatible with all Android phones and tablets?
The inReach™ for Smartphone is compatible with Android phones or tablets running Android 2.2 or later. Functionality is enabled by the free Earthmate app, available online from the Google Play store.
Is inReach™ compatible with all iOS devices?
The inReach™ for Smartphone is compatible with iPhone® 3GS, 4, 4S and 5, as well as well as iPod® touch 3rd and 4th generation and all versions of iPad®. Functionality is enabled by the free Earthmate app, available from the iTunes® App Store.
Can I still use inReach™ if I don’t have an Android device or iOS device?
Yes. The inReach™ does not require a companion device, so if you don’t have an Android device, or iOS device, or if your companion device becomes lost or damaged or loses battery power, you can still stay connected. The inReach™ will send up to three pre-loaded text messages, show delivery confirmations via LED, and enable tracking. In case of emergency, you can trigger an SOS alert by push button. There is a locking mechanism to prevent unintentional false alarms. The inReach™ supports one-handed gloved use.

With Follow-Me/Find-Me Tracking and Location, how can my family, friends, and colleagues see where I am?
You can set up a MapShare page and share the link so your family and friends can see your breadcrumb trail. You can password protect your MapShare page and also allow them to send you messages and ping your GPS position.
How many people can track me?
You can allow an unlimited number of people to follow your adventure. The website does not require users to specify who will view the MapShare.
What is the benefit of two-way text messaging?
Communication is reciprocal by its very nature. With two-way messaging, the inReach™ enables the kind of information sharing that can be crucial when you’re in remote or high-risk environments. For example, if you’re planning an adventure, you or the people you’re meeting can communicate changes in time or location. If you’re on the job, your home office can alert you to an emergent problem at a remote assignment.
How are SOS messages delivered?
When the inReach™ is used by itself, SOS messages are delivered by pressing the designated SOS button. Your alert will be relayed to the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC) and then to appropriate New Zealand search and rescue authorities or the appropriate local authorities if you are somewhere else in the world. If your inReach™ is paired with an Android or iOS device, you can send a text message describing your exact situation to properly prepare responders and maintain contact with the IERCC for mutual updates.
Who is contacted when I need help?
When an SOS is sent, our partners at the GEOS IERCC are contacted. They provide 24/7/365 emergency response capability. When the SOS is sent, one of their Duty Officers at the IERCC will be dealing with your emergency, liaising with the appropriate New Zealand search and rescue authorities or the appropriate local authorities if you are somewhere else in the world as well as coordinating any additional private search and rescue resources that may be required to rescue you or save your life. IERCC will also notify the emergency contacts on your inReach™ account.
How long does it take for outbound messages to be delivered and inbound messages to be received?
Your message will reach its recipient’s email inbox or cell phone within seconds. Occasionally, there may be delays due to atmospheric or other conditions, but in those instances the lag time would be measured in seconds, not minutes. In very rare cases, delivery may take longer due to the line of sight of the satellite’s position. For inbound messages, inReach™ will check for incoming messages every 20 minutes. In SOS mode with a paired inReach, the satellite will check for return messages from the Response Center every 60 seconds during the first 10 minutes and then at the same interval as the SOS track points are sent for the duration of the rescue.
Can I text anyone I want or just search and rescue if I don’t have an Android phone or iOS device?
In your inReach™ Explore account, you can set up your inReach™ to send pre-loaded messages to any email addresses or cell phone numbers of your contacts. You can also direct your messages to your Twitter, Facebook, and MapShare pages.
